All From Abundance - Vol. #010
Don't Forget to Feed Me in the Morning
“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you!”
— Psalm 84:11-12 (ESV)
When we live as a son or daughter, we walk in a way that is confident and faithful, placing our trust in the One who holds it all. Today, I want to share about having an abundance mentality and identifying the Source of lasting nourishment.
Our daughter is 3 1/2 — going on 13. She’s an absolute joy. We are also really good parents who feed our kids daily. Every single night as we’re walking out of her room after tucking her into bed she says, “Don’t forget to feed me in the morning!”
Our sweet girl says it to be funny, but she’s also hopeful and confident that her good parents will nourish and provide for her first thing in the morning.
And don’t you know, as soon as she wakes up, she walks down the steps and asks what she can have for breakfast. Expectant.
What if we approached our Heavenly Father in the same way? Entering His presence, reading His Word, and believing that He’s not holding out on us. He’s a good Daddy who wants to nourish us every single day.
“Pray then like this: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread…'”
— Matthew 6:9-11 (ESV)
Provision. Nourishment. We can literally trust that God will provide for us, today.
We are all susceptible to looking for nourishment in the wrong places. But when we look at Scripture as the beginning of all wisdom and knowledge (Colossians 2:3), we will step into another layer of spiritual maturity and live from an abundance mentality.
Look all around you. Don’t you see God’s provision in the smallest of birds? The details and colors of fall all around us?
He cares about you even more.
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”
— Matthew 6:25-26 (ESV)
His Word gives life to our bones.
His Word gives light to our path.
His Word breathes hope into our heart.
We can hear the Word, take it to heart, and trust that fruit will come in time.
“As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.”
— Luke 8:15 (ESV)
Good soil requires hearing the Word, which calls us to be in His Word.
Good soil means holding fast to the Word with your whole heart, not putting trust in anything else.
Good soil will see a harvest with patience and endurance.
Feeding on God’s Word takes discipline. It costs us our comfort and convenience.
In 1 Samuel 30, we learn of David and his men arriving to their hometown of Ziklag where they find it completely robbed and burned up, with all their wives and children taken captive.
“And David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because all the people were bitter in soul, each for his sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.”
— 1 Samuel 30:6 (ESV)
Before responding or reacting, he chose to pursue strength in the Lord. Other translations say he "encouraged himself" in the Lord his God. The verb is ḥāzaq, "be(come) strong, strengthen, prevail, harden, be courageous."
With open hands we surrender, then with open hands with receive. The great exchange.
David chose to get quiet with God and be filled up. When he was at his lowest, he chose to connect with God and chose to find comfort in His God. Only after sitting with God - quieting himself and calming his mind and body - was he able to respond courageously.
Our daughter reminds me to seek out lasting nourishment. I want to be fed every single day and I know God wants to strengthen and nourish me.
Whether I have 5 minutes or 45 minutes, one of my favorite resources is Breath as Prayer by Jennifer Tucker - a devotional that connects Scripture to our mind in alignment with our breath. Practicing a verse a few minutes each morning allows me to return to and to recall that truth during the day. It brings me hope, joy, and peace when I need it the most.
Today, let’s choose to live as sons and daughters. May our minds be filled with belief, expectant to encounter Him.
Let’s seek His face, the truth of His Word, and I promise you will find Him.
Because He’s a good Daddy.
