All From Abundance - Vol. #006

Live in the Light - Brittany

A few Sundays ago, we were leaving church and our son saw his reflection in the car window and said with frustration, “Man, I’m so short!”

I was so caught off guard by his statement, because this is the kid who has grown significantly over the past year and whose sweatpants barely reach his ankles these days.

I tried to come up with a response that reminded him of what is true, but it didn’t matter. Convinced of how short he was, he got in the van and slammed the door.

How could he think this? His statement could not be further from the truth. I see the literal growth that has happened in his body over the last year. How could he not see this for himself too?

Often in life, we see ourselves in the mirror or window and get frustrated with what we see. Perhaps it doesn’t meet our expectations, or maybe we’re comparing ourselves to others. We wish we were smaller, bigger, taller - anything other than what we see in our reflection. We get fixated on one thing and then become frustrated we aren’t further along.

I’m learning that freedom from this perspective starts in the mind.

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” - Galatians 5:1

Freedom starts with truth, not a feeling. Truth about who God says you are. Truth about your body, purpose, and future. And when you dig your heels in to what is actually true and really begin to take God at His word, the “feelings follow the knowing” as one of my favorite authors, Jess Connolly, likes to say.

What if we started living from what we know rather than from what we feel? Actually starting from a place of fullness. I’m realizing that if the enemy can’t have all of me, then he will do everything he can to distract me, steal my attention, kill my hope, and destroy my confidence.

But in Christ, there is fullness and abundance! We need only to trade our thoughts for His.

The good news is we actually can discipline our thoughts and take them captive. I love the way Paul phrases it in 2 Corinthians 10:5 - we punish our rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey what is true.

And once we know the truth, we have one simple response: to live in the light.

“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.” - Psalm 84:11

Live in the light. Walk in the light, the truth, the favor and honor from God. Live fully awake to what God is doing in your life and the lives around you. Don’t allow the enemy to keep you hiding in shame, but lift your eyes and see the goodness all around you.

He’s not holding out on us. He is calling us to lift our eyes, receive all of Him, and live from a place of complete abundance.

Until next time,

All From Abundance - Vol. #011 Don't Let Me Fall Back again with another story about our daughter. Let’s be real - kids are the best teachers. One morning this week before coming down for school, Kennedy ran back in her room for one more thing. We usually walk down together, and I was truly in a rush thinking of all the things I needed to do before we left the house. However, I quickly noticed she had socks on, and her walking down the stairs in socks is a recipe for disaster. So I waited....

All From Abundance - Vol. #010 Don't Forget to Feed Me in the Morning “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you!” — Psalm 84:11-12 (ESV) When we live as a son or daughter, we walk in a way that is confident and faithful, placing our trust in the One who holds it all. Today, I want to share about having an abundance mentality and identifying the...

All From Abundance - Vol. #009 The Truest Thing About Me I finished a great book this summer on the body - how to view our bodies with a Kingdom mindset, and how God views our bodies as made in His image. This quote has been wrecking me: “The truest thing about me, the most valuable aspect of myself that I bring into every situation and relationship is that God loves me, calls me His friend, and has made me His ambassador.” - Jess Connolly, Breaking Free from Body Shame This is so contrary to...
