House of…

House of praise, house of prayer, and a house of peace.

This has been a prayer of mine all summer and even one I shared at a wedding a few weeks ago as a dear friend began married life with her husband. A declaration for our bodies, our home, and the places we inhabit.

If you’re like me, you need a little something extra to help Scripture stick in your brain. Our minds are full, the emotional load is great, and our houses are loud. But I know God has called us to carry the person of peace (Ephesians 2:14) while also stewarding our homes and families (1 Peter 5:2).

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
-- ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4‬:‭4‬-‭7‬ ESV

When I read this, I want ALL of it in my heart and mind!! But I choose to focus on a few words to simplify and direct my thoughts throughout the day.

PRAISE. Paul says to rejoice! I can be thankful and see the good around me when my eyes are up! I declare praise over my body, my kids, our marriage, and our home. When my mind is triggered to praise first, I am aware of God in my midst.

PRAYER. The Lord is at hand in everything, but Paul still tells us to let our requests be made known to God! It’s surrender but also work. A direction for my worries and thoughts. I even ask God that prayer would be a constant rhythm of our home and family. We will stop to pray for a missing toy, eraser, or Lego. (In Jesus name, help us find it!) My thoughts can also be taken captive and brought into the light of truth, honor, and excellence (Philippians 4:8).

PEACE. Biblical peace is beyond understanding, guarding our hearts and minds. And unfortunately, that means my peace is not directly correlated to a perfectly clean house or finished to do list. Peace is a quiet and confident trust in God (Isaiah 30:15). Peace is a mind kept on Him (Isaiah 26:3). Peace is a person (Ephesians 2:14). Now, I can rest in those truths. My prayer is that our home would be a house of peace. Not one that is absent from conflict, but one that pursues peace. Pursues God’s presence. The God of peace wants to be with us.

Praise. Prayer. Peace. Just a few simple words, but they draw us to Philippians 4 and show us how we can take our thoughts captive. Whether we are praying for our physical bodies, the house of the Holy Spirit, or our physical homes, we can declare and believe it will be done. His Word never returns void (Isaiah 55:11).

All From Abundance - Vol. #011 Don't Let Me Fall Back again with another story about our daughter. Let’s be real - kids are the best teachers. One morning this week before coming down for school, Kennedy ran back in her room for one more thing. We usually walk down together, and I was truly in a rush thinking of all the things I needed to do before we left the house. However, I quickly noticed she had socks on, and her walking down the stairs in socks is a recipe for disaster. So I waited....

All From Abundance - Vol. #010 Don't Forget to Feed Me in the Morning “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you!” — Psalm 84:11-12 (ESV) When we live as a son or daughter, we walk in a way that is confident and faithful, placing our trust in the One who holds it all. Today, I want to share about having an abundance mentality and identifying the...

All From Abundance - Vol. #009 The Truest Thing About Me I finished a great book this summer on the body - how to view our bodies with a Kingdom mindset, and how God views our bodies as made in His image. This quote has been wrecking me: “The truest thing about me, the most valuable aspect of myself that I bring into every situation and relationship is that God loves me, calls me His friend, and has made me His ambassador.” - Jess Connolly, Breaking Free from Body Shame This is so contrary to...
